Exceptional variation of assessment
Exceptional Variation of Assessment (EVA) (previously known as Special Consideration) allows the University to consider significant factors impacting your studies and provide adjustments to assessments.
What does EVA offer?
What you can apply for is dependent on the assessment type and length of impact. You can apply for EVA if:
- You can't submit your assessment (including dissertations, essay, assignments) within 48 hours of the due date
- You're unable to sit your exam on the scheduled day, time or location
- If you're unable to attend or complete a timed assessment (including tests/laboratories/mid-semester and final exams, and presentations)
- You need to withdraw from your unit after the academic withdrawal date
What EVA cannot offer
The following are not part of EVA, but are available through other processes:
- Exam Adjustments for ongoing health conditions and/or disability are available through UniAccess.
- Supplementary assessments are granted automatically based on eligibility.

Am I eligible?
We follow the eligibility criteria in the EVA Policy, and consider:
- Your circumstances
- Their impact on your ability to complete your assessment, and
- If you met the deadline to apply
Examples of eligible circumstances:
- Short-term health condition or exacerbation of ongoing condition
- Hardship or trauma
- Unavoidable commitments
- Elite athletes / coaches or Performers
- Bereavement
Examples of ineligible circumstances:
- Misreading/misunderstanding unit outline, exam timetable or assessment deadline?
- Holiday travel?
- Social events
- Work, volunteer, or internship commitments
- Study load (commencing a unit late, overloading, or stress of assessments)?
- Computer/IT issues, unless experienced during an online timed assessment
How and when do I apply?
Understand when and how to apply.
1. Understand the deadline
Apply no later than 3 calendar days after your assessment's due date. If you're aware of an upcoming impact, apply before your assessment's due date. If you're unable to submit your application on time due to exceptional circumstances, include supporting documents that verify this impact with your application. Where an assessment item is:
- Worth 10% or less
- Made up of multiple tasks across the semester and,
- The top 80% of the marks are used in determining overall mark,
You can only apply for EVA after the due date of the final task (and no later than 3 days) if you were impacted for more than 20% of the tasks.
Your application should include supporting documents showing you were impacted for relevant dates during semester.
2. Prepare your supporting documents.
To assess your application, we need to understand the impact of your circumstances which we do with supporting documents.

Please do not upload any sensitive images. Images are not accepted as documentation and will not be assessed.
If your application is on medical grounds and is for 7 days or more, or you have multiple applications totalling 7 days or more, you will need to include an EVA Verification form?[PDF 186KB] completed by a Registered Health Practitioner.
We may contact the signatory or organisation on your documents if we need to verify information. Submitting a falsified document to the University is serious misconduct and disciplinary action may be taken against you for doing so.

3. Submit your application
Go to the online EVA form, enter the details for you unit and assessment, and attach your documents.?
4. Complete your assessment
If you're able to do so without compromising your health or the health of other people.?
5. Receive your application outcome/s.
You should receive an outcome within three University calendar days.?
Prior to delivering an outcome, your Student Advising Office may request a meeting with you to ensure you receive the right outcome and level of support.?
Frequently asked questions

What is the 2-day penalty waiver? What does it mean?
The due date does not change.
The two-day penalty waiver means if you submit your assessment within 48 hours, it will be marked late, but no penalty is applied.
After 48 hours, penalties apply:
A 15% deduction is applied on Day 3 (after 48 hours), with an additional 5% per day (to Day 7). Work submitted more than 7 days after the due date is not accepted.
The penalty waiver does not apply to timed assessments?such as labs, presentations, tests, and quizzes.
Extensions and EVA
- If you're applying for EVA, your application and supporting documents must cover you on or prior to the due, not from the 48 hours
- If you're granted an Exceptional Variation to Assessment (EVA), late penalties apply immediately after the extended due date—no two-day waiver applies to extensions.

When is the due date for in class participation and cumulative assessments?
The due date for cumulative assessment items is the due date of the last assessment. We encourage you to keep all supporting documents related to cumulative assessment items during the semester to ensure you're covered if you need to apply for EVA.

What if I missed my deferred exam?
If you were unable to sit your deferred exam due to exceptional circumstances, you can apply to withdraw from the unit.

Can I submit an incomplete application?
No, you won't be able to submit an application that is incomplete.

Can I start an application and come back to it later?
Yes, you can start an application and come back to it to add details or documents as long as you submit it before the deadline.

What if I don't have supporting documents by the deadline?
After the deadline, once you have supporting documents, you will be asked to provide evidence supporting why you were unable to submit on time. If you're unsure, contact your Student Advising Office to discuss.

What sort of supporting evidence and document format will I require?
Documents must be in PDF, PNG or JPG format, and no larger than 10MB. Documents need to include the date and duration you were impacted for and, where relevant, details of the circumstances. Sensitive images are not accepted. For a detailed list of examples, please see EVA Policy, Table 1.

When do I need to use an EVA Declaration?
If you're applying for EVA on any grounds other than medical and are unsure of what supporting documentation to use, you can provide a completed EVA Declaration?[PDF 144KB] signed by a relevant authorised professional.

When do I need to use an EVA Verification?
If your application for EVA is on medical grounds and you've been impacted for 7 days or more (either in one application, or multiple applications adding up to 7 days) you will need to provide an EVA Verification?[PDF 186KB] in addition to your supporting documentation.

Can I submit an online request for all types of EVA?
All requests for EVA (including withdrawing from unit/s) are to be submitted using the online system.

What if my unit isn't showing in the application?
Only units you're currently studying will appear in the application portal. To make an application for a unit in a previous Teaching Period, send us an email with your supporting documents to askUWA.
